“We applaud Governor Kathy Hochul, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie for including an increase in ‘Gate Money’ in the 2024-2025 New York State Budget. By doing so, it is clear that they have heard us and agree that $40 is not enough, and New Yorkers returning home from incarceration require more support during the intensely vulnerable period immediately upon release. However, the new amount of $200 still comes out of individuals’ own accounts unless they do not have that much in it. Furthermore, this amount is still a far cry from the level of support they need to be successful in their reentry.
“We look forward to working with the Governor and the legislature to build upon this work during the legislative session and pass the Gate Money Bill (A9115/S6643A). This comprehensive legislation would increase the total amount to $2,550 over six months to ensure our fellow New Yorkers have the resources to cover their most basic needs–such as food, housing, transportation, and job preparation expenses–in the months following their release. This support will not only aid them in stabilizing and moving towards self-sufficiency but has strong potential to reduce recidivism, thereby saving taxpayers money while improving public safety.”
