TNSA Will Correct a Significant Flaw Within SNAP that Forces People to Choose Between Essential Job Training and Food Security

New York, NY –– In response to the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate both including the Training & NutritionStability Act (H.R. 3087 and S. 3190) in their respective Farm Bill frameworks, Sam Schaeffer, Executive Director and CEO of the Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO) released the following statement:
“People should never have to choose between putting food on the table and engaging in job training programs. That’s why we are incredibly encouraged to see this rarely-achieved bi-partisan consensus, with House and Senate leaders both including the fix behind the Training & Nutrition Stability Act (H.R. 3087 and S. 3190) in their Farm Bill priorities.
“The inclusion of this provision in the Farm Bill legislation would correct a significant flaw within the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that forces people to choose between essential job training and food security. And by doing so, it will enable them to gain the skills they need to become economically stable in the long run. This not only benefits individuals returning from incarceration and trying to rebuild their lives but also many other populations that face additional challenges to getting employment.
“The SNAP program is crucially important to millions of Americans who otherwise would not have the nutritional resources to survive. It ensures mothers and fathers never have to go hungry so their child can eat. Removing this additional barrier will ensure that is the case for everyone–and additional skills training to become self-sufficient will never be the hurdle standing in the way.
“We encourage both House and Senate leaders to advance a bipartisan Farm Bill that supports robust SNAP benefits during reentry.”
