JOINT STATEMENT FROM THE CENTER FOR EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES AND VOTE.ORG ON LEGISLATION TO RESTORE VOTING RIGHTS TO PEOPLE ON PAROLE IN NEW YORK

New York, NY -- The New York State Legislature recently passed a bill that would automatically restore voting rights to people convicted of a felony once they are on parole. The Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO) and Vote.org issued the following joint statement on the matter:

“CEO and Vote.org strongly believe that all Americans should be able to exercise their right to vote and have a say in the government and policies that affect their everyday lives. We applaud the New York State Legislature’s recent decision to automatically restore voting rights when an individual is released from prison, including if they are still on parole. This action represents a step in the right direction and will restore voting rights to an estimated 35,000 people. It is time for New York to align with other states across the country to advocate for fair and equitable voting rights for all. We encourage Governor Cuomo to sign the bill into law as soon as possible.”
