The Planning and Development Associate will assist in executing CEO’s national fund development strategy through grant writing, drafting grant reports, prospect research, and collaboration with program staff on outreach and engagement strategies for a portfolio of CEO sites.
The Planning and Development Associate will be highly organized and motivated to help attract, develop, and retain resources to sustain and grow the organization by drafting compelling written requests for funding. They will adopt CEO’s results-driven culture to manage a range of deadline-driven projects and promote our work and achievements to attract diverse funding opportunities. They will be adept at partnering with entry- to senior-level staff on high-stakes projects and enthusiastic about building support for reentry and workforce development across a wide range of audiences.
The Institutional Giving team is charged with driving and supporting institutional fundraising efforts across all CEO program sites (currently in twenty-five cities, with more growth projected in the near future) and building the capacity of program staff to serve as partners in this work. The Planning and Development Associate will be comfortable in a deadline-driven work environment in which the highest standards of performance are expected. This role will report to the Senior Manager, Institutional Giving.
Who We Are
The Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO) provides employment services to people with recent criminal convictions. Across the United States, over 6,500 people participate in CEO each year, transitioning to employment that supports themselves, their families, and their communities.
What began as a demonstration project of the Vera Institute of Justice in the 1970s to address employment barriers facing the formerly incarcerated following release in New York City has grown into the leading reentry employment organization in the country, where over 25,000 formerly incarcerated individuals have secured full-time employment since 1996. Since 2009, CEO has gained support to expand its programs through government, nonprofit, and private organizations including the Federal Social Innovation Fund, the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, Robin Hood Foundation, and Rockefeller Foundation. In 2016, CEO embarked on a 5-year strategic plan to grow to serve 9,000 participants annually.
The Nitty Gritty:
Responsibilities of the Planning and Development Associate will include but are not limited to:
- Drafts, assembles, and submits responses to government and foundation requests for proposals (RFPs)
- Drafts and submits impactful and tailored grant reports for designated government and foundation grants
- Works with program staff to ensure on-time submission of grant-related deliverables by thoroughly planning, delegating, and adhering to timelines and content requirements
- Manage a defined portfolio of existing funders as well as prospects to ensure proper cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation: prepare strategy/research memos and draft meeting request/follow-up correspondence
- Coordinate with Finance Department, Site Directors, and other Fund Development staff to ensure that check processing and funder acknowledgments are completed in a timely and accurate manner
- Coordinates visits from current and potential funders to CEO locations within the Planning and Development Associate’s assigned portfolio of sites
- Assists in developing and executing strategies for growing CEO’s governmental and foundation support
- Coordinates meetings with key program staff to advance specific fund development efforts
- Tracks all fund development campaign-related activities using Salesforce
- Researches funding prospects with alignment to CEO’s mission and impact
- Provides research and analytic support for funding or program ideas
- Perform other duties as assigned
Who You Are:
- You have excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to compellingly engage with diverse audiences
- You have an understanding of and dedication to the mission of CEO
- You have commitment and interest in criminal justice, workforce development, and/or community development
- You have a growth mindset that demonstrates a willingness to learn, an ability to adapt and agility to quickly shift priorities to meet the changing needs of our work
- You display an in-depth knowledge of donor research tools and CRM systems, experience with Salesforce strongly preferred
- You have demonstrated ability to work autonomously to produce materials on deadline, while often managing multiple concurrent deadlines
- You have meticulous attention to detail and the ability to prioritize work in a fast paced environment
- You have team orientation, strong interpersonal skills, and ability to relate well to people from a wide range of backgrounds
- You have experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and G Suite (Google Apps)
Education & Experience:
- A Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred
- Minimum of 2-3 years of related work experience, including at least one year’s experience in nonprofit grant writing/fund development with a proven track record of success.
The salary range for this position is $50,000 - $60,000.
